The other day, I came across a study from Oxford University that basically says owning a home might actually help you live longer. Four months longer, to be exact. Sounds like a real estate agent’s dream statistic, right? But hear me out-there’s actually something to it.
First off, let’s talk money. When you own a home, you’re not just throwing rent at your landlord every month and getting nothing in return. Instead, you’re building equity-your own personal financial safety net. That kind of financial stability can make a huge difference in stress levels over time.
Then there’s the whole community aspect. Homeowners tend to stay put longer, which means stronger neighborhood connections, more friendships, and-believe it or not-better mental health. It makes sense. When you actually know your neighbors and feel connected to your area, life just feels a little less chaotic.
And let’s not forget about control. Renters deal with surprise rent hikes, landlords who take forever to fix things, and that wonderful rule about not painting your walls anything other than ‘landlord beige.’ Homeowners, on the other hand, get to call the shots. That sense of stability and control? Turns out, it’s great for your well-being.
But here’s where things get tricky. Homeownership among younger buyers-especially millennials-isn’t looking so great. In 2024, only 33% of millennials owned a home by age 30, which is a sharp drop compared to past generations. The reasons? Sky-high prices, rising interest rates, and an economy that’s making it harder for younger buyers to break into the market.
So yeah, owning a home has some real perks, but for many, it’s easier said than done. If you’re one of the lucky ones already in the game, congrats-you might just be adding a few extra months to your life. If you’re still trying to get there, don’t give up. The market might be tough, but there are always ways to make it work. And when you’re ready, you know where to find me.
