SOMA would the be last place I’d buy in SF. It lacks any sort of SF feel, there is no personality nor night-life.
We don’t live down there, so can’t speak to daily life in the area, but we gotta ask…you SOMA folks gonna take that!?

Generally we shy away from, and don’t agree with, personal attacks, but since you don’t know each other either, we thought it a funny, stereotypical generalization about residents of the Marina. What is this guy talking about?!? There’s tons of nightlife, restaurants and hip bars in SOMA. It’s a great place to live and hangout. While it doesn’t feel like Pac Heights or the Marina, it does have it’s own SF feel. It’s way better than the wasteland out in the avenues.
Sorry — South of Market doesn’t have any unifying neighborhood feel or characteristics, unless you think wide-empty boulevards on the weekends without ballgames is a great neighborhood feature.
That’s not to say that it won’t develop something, but it will take time, and unfortunately, with the mass condo-exodus, it will probably take another 5-10 years before we define South of Market anything other than high-rise condoland.
Anyone who thinks The Infinity is in SOMA doesn’t get around much! South Beach and SOMA are extremely different. Having lived in both for the last 6 years (and all over SF before that), I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the city. If you don’t like it, stay away!

When you buy a place in areas such as north beach, haight, castro, etc you are purchasing a piece of history. The Victorian styling is beautiful. As much as everyone hates the city’s historic preservation laws, it gives the buildings character.
The original poster did consider purchasing a home in the peninsula. That should tell you what prospective SOMA buyers look for in a neighborhood. There is nothing wrong with SOMA, just something I would not consider.
Also hillbillyjim, I don’t live in the Marina but would much rather live there than SOMA.
Buying in SOMA is dumb b/c of all the SUPPLY and lack of activity on the weekends. I’d buy in District 7 (Northern SF) anyday.

Joe B, I have lived in Manhattan and certainly have no desire to move back — mainly because there are too many people like you there.
As for SOMA, I really find high-rise living sterile and impersonal and I don’t think there is much of a defining character to the neighborhood at this point. But if you work in FiDi and crave views of the Bay, it is not a bad choice. To each his own.
The OP mentioned he wanted to purchase a unit at the Infinity for around $500k. I didn’t realize they had anything there for that little! Another poster (who tried to post their email) noted that they were also looking and knew someone that had purchased in the $500k-$600k range. My question is, what can you get for $500k-$600k? are these units in tower 2? And if you extend up to $800k, what could you get in comparison? Does anyone know if the Infinity is being flexible in negotiations? I keep hearing they aren’t having any problems selling their units, but I keep looking up and Tower 2 looks pretty vacant. Maybe they haven’t let the new owners move in yet? Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

Infinity Sales team is being very flexible and you should contact us. You’d be surprised. Of course the sales office is always going to say it’s all sunshine and roses, that’s their job…sell them all at the highest prices they can. They’re good. Good people too.
