Comment Du Jour: SOMA Gets Dissed

somaview

From “anon” on our recent post, “Battle Royale: San Francisco’s Infinity Tower Versus Some Peninsula Townhouse”:

SOMA would the be last place I’d buy in SF. It lacks any sort of SF feel, there is no personality nor night-life.

We don’t live down there, so can’t speak to daily life in the area, but we gotta ask…you SOMA folks gonna take that!?

[Update: In case you don’t read comments or care to add insight, this is what you’re missing:

This is probably from some [person] that rents in the Marina with his loose Armani Xchange Jeans on and a tight Ed Hardy T Shirt that tries to be hip and parties at Medjool on Saturdays, giving high fives to stangers at the club. . Is this a correct, assumption?

We’ll go ahead and throw an LOL in for that one! Don’t know about the assumption and don’t know the original commenter. Generally we shy away from, and don’t agree with, personal attacks, but since you don’t know each other either, we thought it a funny, stereotypical generalization about residents of the Marina. You Marina peeps gonna take that!?]

This is probably from some douche bag that rents in the Marina with his loose Armani Xchange Jeans on and a tight Ed Hardy T Shirt that tries to be hip and parties at Medjool on Saturdays, giving high fives to stangers at the club. . Is this a correct, assumption?

  2. What is this guy talking about?!? There’s tons of nightlife, restaurants and hip bars in SOMA. It’s a great place to live and hangout. While it doesn’t feel like Pac Heights or the Marina, it does have it’s own SF feel. It’s way better than the wasteland out in the avenues.

  3. Sorry — South of Market doesn’t have any unifying neighborhood feel or characteristics, unless you think wide-empty boulevards on the weekends without ballgames is a great neighborhood feature.

That’s not to say that it won’t develop something, but it will take time, and unfortunately, with the mass condo-exodus, it will probably take another 5-10 years before we define South of Market anything other than high-rise condoland.

  4. Anyone who thinks The Infinity is in SOMA doesn’t get around much! South Beach and SOMA are extremely different. Having lived in both for the last 6 years (and all over SF before that), I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the city. If you don’t like it, stay away!

  5. Oh boy.

When you buy a place in areas such as north beach, haight, castro, etc you are purchasing a piece of history. The Victorian styling is beautiful. As much as everyone hates the city’s historic preservation laws, it gives the buildings character.

The original poster did consider purchasing a home in the peninsula. That should tell you what prospective SOMA buyers look for in a neighborhood. There is nothing wrong with SOMA, just something I would not consider.

Also hillbillyjim, I don’t live in the Marina but would much rather live there than SOMA.

  6. Buying in SOMA is dumb b/c of all the SUPPLY and lack of activity on the weekends. I’d buy in District 7 (Northern SF) anyday.

  7. haters, like posers, need a life. that goes for the SOMA hater and the Marina hater alike.

in a city where we pride ourselves on acceptance, somehow it’s cool to be a marina hater. what – you were made fun of by what you perceive were marina-types in high school, so now you post your venom on yelp and sfgate articles to get back at them? wow, that makes you cool. congrats on finding yourself

we have real estate agent haters, landlord haters, home owner haters, people who lost their home haters, people who kept their home haters, rent control renter haters…. we have gay haters, gay marriage haters… and yes, we have marina haters. good on ya, you’re a hater, and you’ve got a big club you are unwittingly conforming to

god damn douche bag haters, i hate them

  8. if there was no marina, certain segments of san francisco would have to invent one so they could feel superior without having to think.

  9. I’m from Manhattan and live here now. All this neighborhood clashing makes me laugh:

PEOPLE, SF IS AN OVERPRICED PIECE OF SHT TOWN (that’s right it’s not even a city) WITH SHT WEATHER AND DILLWEED RESIDENTS

so get over yourselves. thank the stars i;m only here for a couple years.

  10. Joe B, I have lived in Manhattan and certainly have no desire to move back — mainly because there are too many people like you there.

As for SOMA, I really find high-rise living sterile and impersonal and I don’t think there is much of a defining character to the neighborhood at this point. But if you work in FiDi and crave views of the Bay, it is not a bad choice. To each his own.

  11. The OP mentioned he wanted to purchase a unit at the Infinity for around $500k. I didn’t realize they had anything there for that little! Another poster (who tried to post their email) noted that they were also looking and knew someone that had purchased in the $500k-$600k range. My question is, what can you get for $500k-$600k? are these units in tower 2? And if you extend up to $800k, what could you get in comparison? Does anyone know if the Infinity is being flexible in negotiations? I keep hearing they aren’t having any problems selling their units, but I keep looking up and Tower 2 looks pretty vacant. Maybe they haven’t let the new owners move in yet? Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

    1. Bernard,

Infinity Sales team is being very flexible and you should contact us. You’d be surprised. Of course the sales office is always going to say it’s all sunshine and roses, that’s their job…sell them all at the highest prices they can. They’re good. Good people too.
